Abstract

With The Inoperative Community, Jean-Luc Nancy deconstructs the mythical idea of community as totalized work by presenting its inoperative nature. Accordingly, community is not a closed structure of identity articulated by the myth of the birth and the destiny of a people, but rather as community constantly exposed to alterity.

Singular bodies play the decisive role here, since this communal exposure occurs precisely through the being-together of singular bodies. Inoperativity is not only the being of community; it is being as such, in the sense of being-outside-itself.
