History of TRIẾT: Journal of Philosophy and Thought

TRIẾT: Journal of Philosophy and Thought was founded in the summer of 1996 by a group of Vietnamese scholars specializing in philosophy, religious studies, and the humanities, working in the United States and several other countries. The journal emerged from the aspiration to create an independent scholarly forum where Vietnamese intellectuals could exchange ideas, engage in critical dialogue, and advance research in philosophy, thought, religion, and culture within an increasingly globalized intellectual landscape.

The founding initiators included Professor Nguyễn Hữu Liêm, Professor Như Hạnh Nguyễn Tự Cường, Professor Phan Công Chánh, Professor Nguyễn Vĩnh Để, and Professor Nguyễn Văn Trung. From its inception, TRIẾT sought to connect Vietnamese scholars across national boundaries while introducing Vietnamese philosophical and intellectual traditions to the broader international academic community.

After a period of publication, the journal entered a new phase in 2020 when it was revived as an online publication in response to the changing environment of academic publishing and the rapid development of digital technologies. This transition marked a significant milestone in the journal’s development, enabling wider accessibility and fostering greater scholarly exchange among researchers worldwide. During this relaunch, the founding group of sponsors and advisors continued to include Professors Nguyễn Hữu Liêm, Nguyễn Tự Cường, Phan Công Chánh, Nguyễn Vĩnh Để, and Nguyễn Văn Trung. Technical management was undertaken by Dr. Nguyễn Lê Tiến, while Professor Trần Văn Đoàn provided academic guidance and consultation.

Beginning with Issue No. 5 (July 2021), the editorial structure was further consolidated. Professor Nguyễn Hữu Liêm served as Editor-in-Chief, Professor Như Hạnh Nguyễn Tự Cường as Academic Advisor, Dr. Dương Ngọc Dũng as Managing Editor, and Dr. Nguyễn Lê Tiến as Technical Editor. During this period, the journal gradually rebuilt its network of contributors, strengthened its academic standards, and expanded its presence within the Vietnamese philosophical community.

A major milestone occurred in late 2023 when TRIẾT established institutional partnerships with the Center for Vietnamese Studies at National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan) and the Faculty of Philosophy at Vietnam National University, Hanoi. These collaborations were facilitated in large part through the academic connections and efforts of Professor Trần Văn Đoàn. From 2023 onward, the Center for Vietnamese Studies at National Cheng Kung University officially assumed the role of the journal’s publishing institution.

With Issue No. 11 (March 2024), TRIẾT entered a new stage characterized by greater institutionalization and internationalization. Professor Tưởng Vi Văn, Director of the Center for Vietnamese Studies at National Cheng Kung University, became actively involved in the journal’s publishing leadership. Professor Nguyễn Hữu Liêm continued to serve as Editor-in-Chief. The Editorial Board was expanded under the leadership of Professor Nguyễn Quang Hưng as Executive Associate Editor, working alongside Dr. Trần Thúy Ngọc, Dr. Đặng Hữu Toàn, Associate Professor Wang Shang-wen, doctoral researcher Nguyễn Thị Thịnh (from 2025), and doctoral researcher Nguyễn Anh Chung (from 2025). Dr. Nguyễn Lê Tiến remained responsible for technical operations, while Professor Trần Văn Đoàn assumed the position of Chair of the Advisory Council.

Today, TRIẾT is published online three times a year, with Professor Nguyễn Quang Hưng serving as Executive Editor. Over nearly three decades of development, the journal has evolved from an intellectual initiative of Vietnamese scholars abroad into an international academic forum that brings together researchers from Vietnam and around the world. Through its commitment to philosophical inquiry and interdisciplinary dialogue, TRIẾT continues to promote the study of philosophy, religion, culture, and intellectual history while contributing to the global visibility and development of Vietnamese philosophical scholarship
